01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Once seated, guests are introduced to the day’s fresh fish and meat, along with seasonal vegetables, building quiet anticipation for the courses ahead. Set in a residential neighbourhood in Komaba, Meguro, Cignale Enoteca is an Italian restaurant centred on counter seating in front of an open kitchen, where diners can take in the dishes as they are prepared. Appetisers bring together seafood such as bluefin tuna, sea urchin and seasonal crab. Italian techniques meet Japan’s abundant ingredients in dishes including rich, milky burrata and fritters served with a bright salsa verde.
A generous progression of handmade pasta and house bread
House-made breads such as focaccia and ciabatta are served between courses. Some reviewers say they are hard to stop eating, especially alongside the sauces. Main courses include Japanese Black wagyu fillet steak and cutlets, cooked with care to keep the meat tender and let its natural flavour come through. Pasta is another highlight towards the end of the course: seasonal dishes might include chewy handmade tajarin or lasagnette carrying the savoury depth of clam broth or porcini, bringing the meal to a rich close.
A varied wine list and a relaxed evening at the counter
True to the “Enoteca” in its name, the restaurant offers a broad drinks selection, from sparkling, white and red wines to Japanese sake, a house-made basil mojito and non-alcoholic options. Reservations are required. In the warm, calm surroundings, the intimate setting suits a special occasion or celebratory meal. Dessert might be pudding or crème brûlée, followed by freshly brewed coffee to round off the leisurely course.
